Mindful Ingredient Sourcing

1/. Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (ph 4-7)

Positive Effects:

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil "EVCO" is an oil with true potential to balance our internal government creating a sustainable ecosystem from within our mouths. EVCO is a nutrient-rich oil considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. EVCO reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth and in doing so alleviates bad breath, gum inflammation, gingivitis and cavities.

Educate: Plaque is fat soluble meaning it dissolves in the presence of medium chain fatty acids which is the active agent with Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.

EVCO has Microbes: microbes may play defense against autoimmune diseases. EVCO both boost the immune system and digestion setting our intestines up for effortless elimination of what no longer serves the body. EVCO recently proved through studies that it may help prevent tooth decay. Starting with just 5 minutes a day is enough. EVCO that is cold pressed is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals, unstable molecules that the body produces as a reaction to environmental and other pressures.

EVCO creates the opportunity for sublingual absorption. Sublingual absorption: Sublingual, meaning literally 'under the tongue' refers to a method of administering substances via the mouth in such a way that the substances are rapidly absorbed via the blood vessels under the tongue rather than via the digestive tract.

EVCO opens the door to lipid solubility which is a process affecting both central nervous system (CNS) penetration and the extent of hepatic metabolism. Lipid solubility is the ability of vitamins and minerals to dissolve in fats, oils, or fatty tissues.

Giveness’ promise of Mindful Sourcing

Cold Pressed, extra virgin coconut oil is solely made up of triglycerides (fats). And each triglyceride composes of 3 fatty acids that are bonded to a glycerol molecule.

When you extract the oil from coconut meat, a small fraction of fatty acids will inevitably "escape" from the bonding in the triglyceride structures. These free fatty acids are what make coconut oil acidic. The more fatty acids are freed, the more acidic the coconut oil will be.

Of course, you can use a very good technique for extracting virgin coconut oil to reduce its acidity. Even in a perfect condition whereby the cold-pressed coconut oil doesn't have a single free fatty acid at all, it is at best as neutral (ph 7) as water. You can never bring the coconut oil up to an alkaline level (pH > 7).

2/. Medium Chain Triglycerides MCT Oil

Positive Effects: Whiter teeth , Cavity and gingivitis prevention, Better breath, Stronger teeth and gums. Less jaw pain (TMJ sufferers noted great improvement), reports have shown MCT to heal psoriasis and eczema.

Educate: There are four different types of MCT’s: C6, C8, C10 and C12. They are named like that because of the number of carbon atoms (6 to 12) it contains. Each of them has its own unique benefits, however C8 and C10 increase ketone levels more efficiently, being an excellent source for energy and brain health. And by the way, ketones also suppress your hunger hormones, making you feel satisfied for longer.

But what’s ‘wrong’ with the other 2 types? Nothing. Well, C6 also converts quickly to ketones but it tastes quite bitter and can cause GI distress. And C12, although it is considered an MCT, its longer fatty chain (12) makes it less easy to metabolize. It’s well-known mostly for its great antiviral and antimicrobial properties. However, it is less potent when it comes to brain health.

C8 Fighting infections:

  • C8 has strong antibacterial and antifungal properties, just like C10. These properties have shown effects in treatments of yeast infections, and even improving skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and Dermatophilosis.

Improving gut health:

  • There’s evidence that the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties from C8 can help keep bad bacterias in check to treat digestive disorders like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
  • A study has shown that C8 can suppress cytokines, which are responsible for bowel damage in Chron’s disease, stomach ulcers, and IBS.

Ketones (chemically known as ketone bodies) are byproducts of the breakdown of fatty acids. The breakdown of fat for fuel and the creation of ketones is a normal process for everyone. In a person without diabetes, insulin, glucagon, and other hormones prevent ketone levels in the blood from getting too high.

MCTS act as an antioxidant, and also has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties thanks to the lauric acid C8 C10 and monolaurin. Monolaurin is a chemical made from lauric acid, which is found in coconut oil and human breast milk.

Monolaurin is used for preventing and treating colds (the common cold), flu (influenza), swine flu, herpes, shingles, and other infections. It is also used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and to boost the immune system.

Monolaurin is effective against an impressive array of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and parasites. Perhaps most encouraging, however, is that monolaurin has not been shown to result in antibacterial resistance nor to have adverse effects on beneficial intestinal flora. For these reasons, in addition to acute targeted use, it may also be used as a potential preventive measure during cold and flu season or taken on an ongoing basis by individuals susceptible to recurrent infection and illness. Monolaurin may be a good thing to have on hand during the long, cold, dark days of winter.

Sourcing Considerations: we are  interested in the C8, C10 for the Lauric acid content because we are looking for the antifungal antiviral antibody properties of the MCT oil more than the brain health.

3/. Humic Fulvic Acid Mineral (9+)

Positive Effects: Protects cells from sugar damage. Neutralizes toxins produced within cells. A powerful antioxidant which neutralizes free radicals. Both antimicrobial and antifungal activity.

These go hand in hand. Humic opens the gate and fulvic is the nutrient taxi 🚖. Educate and Microbe explanation: Fulvic acid occurs naturally in plants and soil and can be thought of as the elixir of life because, without it, life would not exist. Because the molecular weight of fulvic acid is so low, it can easily transport nutrients in the body. In fact, fulvic acids are able to transport over 60 times their own weight in vitamins and minerals into cells. This also makes it easier for cells to digest vitamins and minerals, allowing those who consume fulvic acid to feel its positive health effects faster. Humic acids are big molecules, ranging in molecular size from 10,000 to 100,000. They're dark in color and combine mixtures of carbon chains and carbon rings.  (In addition to carbon, they also contain oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and phosphorus.) The exact composition of humic molecules varies by source. They're not soluble in water in acid conditions, but are soluble in alkaline solutions. Humic acids work best in the soil, where they readily unlock nutrients and bind to them, making them available for uptake into plants. they chelate toxic metals, preventing harmful material from entering the plant. Further, they stimulate microbial activity in soil, increase water retention, and stimulate root and shoot growth. They also act as a dilator, increasing the cell wall permeability of plants so that nutrients can be absorbed. They're all-stars of soil, an essential component of every soil environment that help to make the whole system work better. Humic acids can be thought of as the roads, bridges, and tunnels that allow for essential exchanges between the plant and soil. (Although humic acids work best in soil, they're also vital in foliar applications, because they increase the cell wall permeability of plants, which in turn increases the uptake of nutrients.

Formulation Considerations: Humic acids can form complexes with ions that are commonly found in the environment creating humic colloids. Humic acids are insoluble in water at acid pH. They're not soluble in water in acid conditions, but are soluble in alkaline solutions. Whereas fulvic acids are also derived from humic substances but are soluble in water across the full range of pH.

5/.Holy Basil

Positive Effects: A large body of scientific research supports the traditional uses of this valuable plant. Studies show that holy basil has antimicrobial, adaptogenic, anti-diabetic, hepaton-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, radio-protective, immune-modulatory, neuron-protective, and cardio-protective actions, among many other benefits.

Tulsi's broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, which includes activity against a range of human and animal pathogens, suggests it can be used as a hand sanitizer, mouthwash and water purifier as well as in animal rearing, wound healing, the preservation of food stuffs and herbal raw materials and traveler's health.

Educate: Holy basil leaf contains a variety of beneficial constituents, including eugenol (a volatile oil), Ursolic acid (a triterpenoid), and rosemarinic acid (a phenylpropanoid). Other active compounds include caryophyllene and oleanolic acid, carotenoids, vitamin C, calcium, iron, zinc, and chlorophyll.

One of tulsi’s many important compounds is triterpenoid ursolic acid, which is also found in rosemary. Ursolic acid is one of the cosmetic industry’s latest favorites because not only does it promote skin healing and enhance elasticity, research indicates that it shows potential for preventing and curing skin cancer.1 Ursolic acid is a well-known anti-tumor agent (it suppresses protein kinase C activity, down-regulates MMP-9, and induces apoptosis).2 Other actions of ursolic acid include hepato-protective, anti-inflammatory (COX-2 inhibition),3 anti-ulcer, antimicrobial, anti-hyperlipidemic, and antiviral.

There is not sufficient clinical data that may figure out the right dosage of holy basil essential oil. It should be diluted in carrier oil or another essential oil, with a 50:50 dilution, before you apply it to the skin, or diffusion. It blends well along with any essential oil.

6/. Menthol Crystals

Positive Effects: cooling and numbing elements which can effectively soothe tooth and muscle aches. Research has found that peppermint oil is exceptionally powerful for fighting oral pathogens and killing common bacteria that can lead to cavities and gum disease.

Educate: A manufacturer may contract with an independent organization to verify the quality of a product or its ingredients, but that does not certify the safety or effectiveness of a product.

Peppermint has antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties. It’s one of the most widely used essential oils because of its ability to inhibit biofilm and treat gum disease. It’s also an anti-fungal, meaning it is effective against oral candida as well. It offers a refreshing taste and can take care of bad breath too.

7/.Spearmint Oil

Positive Effects: Spearmint contains vitamins, antioxidants, and vital nutrients. Its aroma is very similar to that of peppermint. It contains less menthol than peppermint, but it is rich in limonene, dihydrocarvone, and cineol. It has a sweeter taste than peppermint.

Educate: A report published in the journal Food Chemistry indicates that spearmint extract has “good total phenolic and flavonoid contents” and “excellent antioxidant activity.” Spearmint essential oil has anti-fungal properties, according to a study presented at the 2011 International Conference on Environmental and Agriculture Engineering.Spearmint may help to relieve symptoms of digestive problems, by relaxing the stomach muscles, reducing symptoms of nausea, and other digestive problems.

There have been multiple questions about certain different oils that are out on  the market as to whether or not they can help cure or heal gum disease. Some of  them being spearmint oil, peppermint oil and wintergreen oil. These oils are  oils that have been found through studies that actually help cure things such as  gum disease and even tooth decay. While the research is not there yet, there are  some preliminary studies that suggest that using these oils in combination with  normal routines such as brushing and flossing that they can actually help delay  the process of gum disease and gingivitis. While it is not solely a contributor  for reversing the disease, there are properties within the oils that have been  found to be calming and relaxing to the tissue. We found that with the oils that  there actually is a decrease in the bleeding when you would normally brush and  floss. It help increases some of the circulation to the gums so the blood flow  to the gums is increased making the gums easier to keep clean and certainly more  comfortable. And certainly from a standpoint of that the oils do potentially  have some antibacterial properties which can also help reduce the incidents of  the bacteria that’s found within gum disease and also tooth decay”.

9/.Prebiotics

Positive Effects: the prebiotic is the fertilizer of nutrients.  Neutralizing pH (cavity prevention), decreasing inflammation, disrupting biofilm (dental plaque), and balancing the microbiota when consumed.

Educate: Prebiotics are not alive, but they are dietary substances that favor the growth of beneficial bacteria over harmful ones. They empower your existing good bacteria (or good bacteria introduced through probiotics) to survive and establish a balanced ration of good-to-bad bacteria using nutrients to influence the oral environment.

Simply put, the ingredients are blocking bacteria from converting the sugars, starches, etc. that we eat into acid, plaque and other destructive by-products. It doesn't eliminate ALL bacteria like antiseptics and antibiotics (which can cause microbial resistance and result in an unhealthy oral microbiome). Instead, it influences the beneficial microbes to convert the protein in our diet, which results in a healthier oral environment.

13/.Camu Camu

Positive Effects: Camu camu is considered a superfood — mainly due to a high content of certain nutrients and powerful plant compounds, including vitamin C.

Educate: Camu camu is rich in vitamin C (Vitamin C plays many important roles in your body. For example, it helps strengthen your immune system and is needed for the formation of collagen, a protein that supports your skin, bones, and muscles. What’s more, vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting your cells from unstable molecules called free radicals. Though free radicals are a normal byproduct of cellular function, too many can be formed as a result of stress, poor diet, and exposure to pollution.

When free radicals outnumber antioxidants in your body, it leads to a condition called oxidative stress, which has been linked to chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Eating foods rich in antioxidants like vitamin C can help prevent oxidative stress and combat free radical damage.

Camu camu is used for viral infections including the common cold, eye conditions including cataracts, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), chronic fatigue syndrome, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.

Some people use camu camu to increase energy and maintain healthy gums, eyes, immune system, and skin. Some people use camu camu to increase energy and maintain healthy gums, eyes, and skin; and as an antioxidant and immune system stimulant.

14/.Wheatgrass

Positive Effects: Wheatgrass has antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Educate: This nutrient-rich grass contains 17 amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins. The body uses these amino acids for things like building muscle tissue, repairing cells and clotting the blood. Wheatgrass retains 92 of the 102 minerals found in the soil. These minerals include calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and potassium. It is a rich natural source of vitamins A and C. Wheatgrass has more vitamin C than oranges and twice the vitamin A of carrots. It is exceptionally rich in vitamins E, K, and B-complex. It is also a natural source of laetrile (B-17). Wheatgrass produces an immunisation effect against many dietary carcinogens.

19/. Vegetable Glycerin

Positive Effects: clear, odorless and sweet-tasting liquid derived from vegetable fats.

Educate: Glycerin is a humectant, a type of moisturizing agent that pulls water into the outer layer of your skin from deeper levels of your skin and the air. In skin care products, glycerin is commonly used with occlusives, another type of moisturizing agent, to trap the moisture that it draws into the skin.

Glycerin speeds up healing of wounds, scratches or blemishes because it can promote the natural maturation of skin cells. The therapeutic effect of glycerol on wounds and other skin diseases is a very good reason to use this easy-to-find and inexpensive substance. Consumption of glycerin-rich foods can help with this, but it certainly isn’t as effective as using pure glycerin intended for therapeutic purposes.

Glycerin stimulates bowel movements. Another common use of glycerin is in the form of a laxative capsule (in the form of an enema). This glycerin-rich delivery will irritate the anal mucosa and cause the bowels to take more water in (hyperosmotic effect), which then stimulates a smooth bowel movement.

Glycerin soothes irritation. Using glycerol on conditions like eczema psoriasis, rash or dry skin can provide a barrier that locks in moisture and promotes healing, while also lowering your desire to itch! Glycerol due to its moisturizing effects is included in so many cosmetic soaps and compounds. It also helps relieve inflammatory conditions on the skin or excess irritation.

Glycerin prevents dehydration. Regular use on those parts of the skin exposed to the elements (particularly wind) that cause loss of water from the skin, is a good way to give your skin and body a protective boost against drying out.  After all, we are composed of more than 70% water, and it’s important to keep hydration levels high!

-Glycerin boosts immune system. Glycerin not only locks in moisture, but also provides a boost of protection for the skin against outside environment, including irritants, pollutants, toxins, and pathogens that would do us harm, or increase irritation.

 20/.Xylitol

Positive Effects: Xylitol has shown the ability to neutralize Streptococcus mutans when consumed in large amounts.

Educate: The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has endorsed xylitol as part of a complete strategy to prevent tooth decay or cavities.

According to the California Dental Association (CDA), to get the optimal dental benefits from xylitol, your daily intake should be 5 grams. You should use xylitol gum or mints three to five times per day.

Xylitol reduces the levels of mutans streptococci (MS) in plaque and saliva by disrupting their energy production processes, leading to futile energy cycle and cell death.7 It reduces the adhesion of these microorganisms to the teeth surface and also reduces their acid production potential.8,9

  1. Bentonite Clay

Positive Effects Scientists believe that bentonite clay works by adsorbing oils and dirt from the skin. The theory is that bentonite clay adsorbs materials by sticking to their molecules or ions. As the clay leaves the body, it takes the toxin or other molecules with it.

When a person uses it on the skin, bentonite clay may have the power to adsorb oils and bacteria. When they consume the clay, it may adsorb toxins or other unwanted substances from the digestive tract. Bentonite clay contains natural minerals such as calciummagnesium, and iron, which may provide additional benefits.

  1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate

Positive effects: SLSA is not required in our product. We chose to use it for the FUN OF FOAM! IT IS SUSTAINABLE, SAFE FUN. is a mild natural cleanser derived from coconut and is Ecocert approved. ... SLSA can remove dirt, oil, product build up and bacteria without causing skin irritation as it is a water loving and mild natural cleanser. Our Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate is great in bubble bars, bath bombs, 2 in 1 Shampoo, Bar Soap, Body Wash, Facial Cleansers, Oral Care and shampoos. Vegetarian and Vegan. ... Derived from Palm and Coconut Oil, Heirloom's Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) is a gentle, non-irritating cleanser with a rich, stable lather.

Differences:

SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate): What is it?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a very inexpensive surfactant that creates large bubbles when combined with water. So what's the issue? SLS (as it's commonly referred to) dries out the skin pulling all nutrients, moisture and minerals out- leaving drier and more damaged skin. It trades at pennies on the dollar for production which is why many large CPG brands use it in their cosmetics. Hmmmm no thank you!

SLS has a small molecular structure and in turn penetrates the skin with ease and is known as a skin irritant and contains elements that have been linked to cancer. It is often used in dish soaps as the product isn’t intended for the skin specifically.

SLSa (Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate): What is it?

SLSa’s molecular size of the surfactant is large, and therefore it does not penetrate the skin. It is derived from coconut and palm oils and is safe, skin friendly cleanser that provides a rich quality lather. Lathanol (as you may also see this product listed as) trades at nearly 400x what SLS trades at per ounce. We believe in using only the best, safest suds for our consumers.
